La perspectiva que delimita la investigaci\u00f3n es de orden hist\u00f3rico y pol\u00edtico. Hist\u00f3rico porque se circunscribe al acontecimiento de la guerra de espa\u00f1a; pol\u00edtico porque pretende analizar c\u00f3mo se recibi\u00f3, se pens\u00f3 y se represent\u00f3 dicho acontecimiento en el marco de un movimiento social y cultural inspirado por la doctrina del frente popular. La circunscripci\u00f3n de nuestro estudio al contexto del popular front determina asimismo el marco espacio-temporal de nuestra investigaci\u00f3n, que contempla pel\u00edculas producidas en estados unidos entre 1936 y 1939. Aqu\u00e9l a\u00f1o no s\u00f3lo finaliz\u00f3 la guerra sino que tambi\u00e9n concluy\u00f3 el periodo de frente popular, cuya consigna de oposici\u00f3n internacional al fascismo vino a ser neutralizada por el ominoso pacto germano-sovi\u00e9tico, el corpus de trabajo se divide en dis partes. La primera de ellas, y la m\u00e1s amplia, corresponde a las pel\u00edculas realizadas por cineastas independientes radicados en nueva york, esas pel\u00edculas son \u00abspain in flames\u00bb (helen van dongen, 1936), \u00abheart of spain\u00bb (herbert kline, 1937), \u00abretum to life\u00bb (henri cartier-bresson, 1938) y \u00abthe spanish earth (jor\u00eds ivens, 1937). La segunda parte comprende el \u00fanico filme de ficci\u00f3n que la izquierda realiz\u00f3 el hollywood durante la d\u00e9cada de 1930: \u00abblockade\u00bb (william dieterle,
