As\u00ed, el mercurio puede encontrarse en una gran variedad de formas qu\u00edmicas siendo las m\u00e1s t\u00f3xicas los compuestos org\u00e1nicos, por su posibilidad de bioacumulaci\u00f3n a lo largo de la cadena tr\u00f3fica. Por tanto, para evaluar la contaminaci\u00f3n por mercurio no es suficiente la determinaci\u00f3n de contenidos totales, sino que se hace necesaria la especiaci\u00f3n en niveles de concentraci\u00f3n del orden de ultratrazas. por este motivo, el principal objetivo de esta tesis ha sido el desarrollo de la metodolog\u00eda necesaria para llevar a cabo este tipo de an\u00e1lisis en muestras de inter\u00e9s medioambiental (tejidos biol\u00f3gicos y sedimentos). Con este fin se ha desarrollado un sistema h\u00edbrido para la especiaci\u00f3n de mercurio acoplando un cromat\u00f3grafo de gases con un detector de fluorescencia at\u00f3mica v\u00eda pir\u00f3lisis t\u00e9rmica, ya que esta t\u00e9cnica pese a no haber sido muy explotada hasta el momento presenta numerosas ventajas en cuanto a sus caracter\u00edsticas anal\u00edticas. Adem\u00e1s se ha desarrollado una metodolog\u00eda para la determinaci\u00f3n simult\u00e1nea de compuestos de mercurio y esta\u00f1o basada en el an\u00e1lisis por diluci\u00f3n isot\u00f3pica espec\u00edfica por medio del acoplamiento cromatograf\u00eda de gases-espectrometr\u00eda de masas. una vez optimizados los m\u00e9todos de an\u00e1lisis sobre materiales de referencia certificados de inter\u00e9s medioambiental, el segundo objetivo, se ha centrado en la aplicaci\u00f3n de estos m\u00e9todos anal\u00edticos a muestras reales. En este sentido, la comarca de almad\u00e9n (espa\u00f1a) resulta de extraordinario inter\u00e9s si recordamos que sus yacimientos de cinabrio son los m\u00e1s antiguos y de mayor producci\u00f3n del mundo. Por este motivo, se ha estudiado, por primera vez, la especiaci\u00f3n y distribuci\u00f3n del mercurio en el sistema constituido por el r\u00edo valdeazogues y el embalse de la serena que se encuentra bajo la influencia de las actividades mineras desarrolladas en almad\u00e9n. Los resultados obtenidos han permitido determinar las tendencias de distribuci\u00f3n del mercurio, as\u00ed como evaluar sus riesgos potenciales.   mercury is an element of undoubted concern from both environmental and health points of view due to its toxicity at trace levels and also because of the possibility of suffering alkylation reactions in the environment. It is well known that organomercuric compounds are more toxic than inorganic forms because of their higher solubility in lipids, which causes bioconcentration in the food chain. It is therefore clear that total mercury determination is not sufficient, and levels of mercury species should be determined in order to evaluate pollution by mercury.  in this way, the first point of this thesis has been the optimisation of the convenient methodology to perform this type of analysis in environmental samples (biological tissues and sediments). Thus, an efficient methodology for the analysis of mercury species was developed combining capillary gas chromatography and atomic fluorescence spectrometry detection, which is an underexploting coupling that features, however, significant advantages. Furthermore, a methodology for the simultaneous determination of mercury and tin compounds based on the use of species-specific isotope dilution analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry has been developed. once the analytical methodology for mercury speciation was optimised and validated, our second objective was the application of these analytical methods to real samples. The speciation analysis of mercury in the almad\u00e9n area (spain) is of extraordinary interest, because its deposits of cinnabar are the most important in the world in terms of mercury mining. Thus, mercury speciation and partitioning have been investigated for the first time in the valdeazogues river-la serena reservoir system impacted by the almad\u00e9n mining activities. Therefore, the assessment of mercury levels in samples taken from the almad\u00e9n mining district will make it possible to determine the distribution trends of mercury, as well as to evaluate its
