La inhibicion de la cadena respiratoria disminuye la union del tnf a sus receptores y protege a las celulas de los efectos toxicos de la citoquina. En nuestro modelo de muerte celular por el tratamiento con tnf y actinomicina d o cicloheximida se produce una disfuncion energetica, caracterizada por un aumento del atp intracelular y de los cocientes atp\/adp en el citoplasma y en la mitocondria. El aumento de la carga energetica celular induce importantes alteraciones en los procesos anabolicos y catabolicos celulares. Ademas, la energia celular acumulada sustenta la existencia de un flujo reverso de electrones, que induce la oxidacion de los citocromos aa3 y cc1 y la reduccion del citocromo b.  la participacion del citocromo b reducido en la muerte celular es apoyada por los efectos protectores que ejerce la antimicina. La organela celular que primera y mas intensamente se afecta es la mitocondria.
