Hasta el momento no se hab\u00eda considerado el papel que juega el sedimento del estuario en la regeneraci\u00f3n bent\u00f3nica de nutrientes en forma gaseosa (metano, \u00f3xido nitroso, etc.) Durante la descomposici\u00f3n anaer\u00f3bica de la materia org\u00e1nica y su relevancia en la qu\u00edmica atmosf\u00e9rica relacionada con el cambio clim\u00e1tico; aspecto importante, pues las aportaciones externas de nutrientes a la que est\u00e1n sometidos los estuarios aceleran los ciclos biogeoqu\u00edmicos, intensificando el papel de \u00e9stos en la retirada de nutrientes del sistema y su liberaci\u00f3n a la atm\u00f3sfera. La producci\u00f3n emisi\u00f3n de gases en el estuario del no palmones muestra una distribuci\u00f3n espacial y estacional atendiendo las propiedades fisicoqu\u00edmicas del sedimento y a diversos factores ecol\u00f3gicos que a su vez est\u00e1n determinados por la influencia de la marea y la presencia de macr\u00f3fitos. Se pueden diferencias dos zonas: el intermareal, donde predomina la sulfatorreducci\u00f3n, y la marisma donde predomina la desnitrificaci\u00f3n. En ambos, la metanog\u00e9nesis tiene un papel muy modesto. En cualquier caso, la formaci\u00f3n de gases s\u00f3lo tiene lugar en verano. La baja temperatura del sedimento y la escasa disponibilidad del nitrato del sedimento son las principales variables fisicoqu\u00edmicas y ecol\u00f3gicas que determinan la formaci\u00f3n y distribuci\u00f3n espacial y estacional de metano y gases de n (\u00f3xido nitroso y nitr\u00f3geno molecular) en el estuario. Gracias a la oxidaci\u00f3n anaer\u00f3bica del metano en el sedimento por bacterias sulfatorreductoras y a la desnitrificaci\u00f3n completa a nitr\u00f3geno molecular el estuario no emite gases con efecto invernadero. Si cambiar\u00e1n las propiedades del sedimento, el estuario podr\u00eda emitir \u00f3xido nitroso, de modo similar a la que tiene lugar en otros estuarios
