La actividad de las enzimas de sintesis y de degradacion de la acetilcolina (ach) fue mayor en los segmentos distales de la circulacion coronaria, indicando que la inervacion es mas densa a este nivel. La estimulacion electrica transmural de las arterias coronarias de resistencia indujo una respuesta vasorrelajante neurogenica sensible a la atropina, lo que indica la presencia de una inervacion colinergica funcional.  la nicotina tuvo un efecto contractil probablemente debido a la liberacion de ach de nervios colinergicos. La ach liberada parece actuar sobre receptores muscarinicos contractiles. Los valores de pkb y el orden de potencia de los antagonistas muscarinicos en arterias sin endotelio, indica que la contraccion a la ach en arterias coronarias de resistencia esta mediada por receptores muscarinicos del subtipo m3.
