Sin embargo, su empleo queda reducido, en la mayor\u00eda de las ocasiones, a una mera funci\u00f3n de ejemplo; los libros de texto los utilizan b\u00e1sicamente como elementos de fijaci\u00f3n y memoriza ci\u00f3n de conocimientos.     las actividades con cartograf\u00eda, empleadas de esta manera, no ayudan a crear un razonamiento espacial, ni al desarrollo de capacidades que permitan una mejor conceptualizaci\u00f3n espacial, entendida como la capacidad de operar  en\/con el espacio geogr\u00e1fico.    nuestro prop\u00f3sito ha sido considerar el mapa como generador de conocimiento, como elemento did\u00e1ctico que potencie habilidades de comprensi\u00f3n y razonamiento. La investigaci\u00f3n se ha marcado cuatro objetivos parciales:   &#8211; comprobar el grado de dominio cartogr\u00e1fico de los alumnos de secundaria en lo referido al tratamiento de la informaci\u00f3n cartogr\u00e1fica. &#8211; determinar la funci\u00f3n que los libros de texto otorgan al mapa en sus dise\u00f1os curriculares. &#8211; dise\u00f1ar materiales  que sirvan para la utilizaci\u00f3n del mapa como activador de conocimiento. &#8211; comprobar la eficacia de esos materiales aplicados en un curso de geograf\u00eda en educaci\u00f3n
