Su hip\u00f3tesis central se localiza en la posibilidad de estudiar a la ciencia ficci\u00f3n como un g\u00e9nero en ambos medios de expresi\u00f3n. Esto requiere, por necesidad, la investigaci\u00f3n de la historia de la ciencia ficci\u00f3n en el cine y la literatura, as\u00ed como el an\u00e1lisis y la confrontaci\u00f3n de los siguientes asuntos: las diversas teor\u00edas surgidas alrededor del concepto de g\u00e9nero; las diferencias entre los g\u00e9neros literarios y cinematogr\u00e1ficos; las diferencias entre la ciencia ficci\u00f3n y otros g\u00e9neros lim\u00edtrofes, tales como lo fant\u00e1stico, lo maravilloso y el realismo; la exploraci\u00f3n de los estudios te\u00f3ricos m\u00e1s importantes dedicados expl\u00edcita y espec\u00edficamente a la ciencia ficci\u00f3n; las diversas definiciones de la ciencia ficci\u00f3n; las m\u00e1s relevantes caracter\u00edsticas de este g\u00e9nero. Adem\u00e1s de la hip\u00f3tesis central mencionada arriba, que comprende y dirige todo el trabajo, cada cap\u00edtulo de esta tesis posee su propia hip\u00f3tesis independiente, interconectada con las del resto de cap\u00edtulos y que se relaciona y ampl\u00eda la hip\u00f3tesis central. A lo largo de la tesis se mencionan y examinan una amplia variedad de textos literarios y cinematogr\u00e1ficos, y los cap\u00edtulos te\u00f3ricos incluyen, cada uno de ellos, un texto que es sujeto a un escrutinio detallado. En suma, se postula a la ciencia ficci\u00f3n como un g\u00e9nero literario y cinematogr\u00e1fico que puede ser provechosamente estudiado desde una perspectiva que lo contemple como g\u00e9nero, como modo y como f\u00f3rmula, as\u00ed como un g\u00e9nero capaz de fagocitar a otros g\u00e9neros con los que entra en contacto y que conserva sus caracter\u00edsticas dominantes en cualquier forma y
