Este decremento es debido a una disminucion en el contenido en carbono y un incremento en el porcentaje de fosforo. Fueron las formas de fosforo ligadas al hierro y aluminio, formando apatito y unido a la materia organica, las responsables del aumento en fosforo. Las bacterias poseen un papel activo en el incremento en fosforo organico. Numerosos trabajos, y en esta tesis, han demostrado que las bacterias actuan mas como sumideros que fuente de fosforo inorganico. Los valores de este indice en las bacterias son inferiores a los encontrados en el seston, luego durante la descomposicion de este no es esperable una liberacion, sino una acumulacion de fosforo. En experimentos de descomposicion de seston obtenido en el embalse de la concepcion se demostro que parte del carbono se pierde, mientras que el fosforo particulado aumenta en biomasa bacteriana, reflejandose en una disminucion de los valores del indice c\/p en el seston, durante su degradacion y que explica el patron vertical obtenido previamente para los valores de este indice en el embalse.  de esto se deriva que la regeneracion de nutrientes es llevada a cabo, en parte, no por las bacterias, sino por aquellos procesos responsables de la muerte bacteriana (bacterivoros
