Es por ello que  los metazoos y organismos unicelulares han desarrollado una serie de mecanismos mediante los cuales mantienen las concentraciones de cobre por debajo de niveles t\u00f3xicos. Es en esta homeostasis del cobre donde participan los transportadores de cobre, ctr1, atp7a y atp7b, estos dos \u00faltimos responsables de las enfermedades de menkes y wilson, respectivamente.%&#038;\/El transportador de cobre atp7b presente en el h\u00edgado, es una atpasa de tipo p, que transloca cobre a trav\u00e9s de la membranas celulares, empleando para ello la energ\u00eda liberada de la hidr\u00f3lisis de atp. Este transportador est\u00e1 implicado en el metabolismo del cobre y su disfunci\u00f3n provoca la enfermedad de wilson caracterizada  por una acumulaci\u00f3n masiva de cobre en el h\u00edgado. %&#038;\/Atp7b en el hepatocito tiene una funci\u00f3n dual, a bajas concentraciones de cobre, se encuentra retenido en la tgn, en el mismo compartimento que sintaxina 6 y el transportador de glucosa glut4, cediendo cobre a las cuproenzimas como la ceruloplasmina, que se est\u00e1n sintetizando y pasan por la via secretora. Por el contrario, con altas concentraciones de cobre, hemos visto que atp7b es translocado a la membrana canalicular donde act\u00faa directamente en el bombeo de cobre fuera del hepatocito.
