Es la \u00fanica corriente activa por debajo del umbral de disparo de potenciales de acci\u00f3n y act\u00faa como un freno inhibitorio que contrarresta la excitaci\u00f3n de la neurona. El sustrato molecular de esta corriente m es la familia de canales de potasio kcnq (kv7.1-5). Mutaciones en kcnq2 o kcnq3 se asocian con un s\u00edndrome epil\u00e9ptico conocido como convulsiones neonatales familiares benignas.  al mimetizar, en oocitos de xenopus, la configuraci\u00f3n de un paciente de bfnc, se ha observado que estas mutaciones s\u00f3lo reducen los niveles de corriente m en un 20-25%. La magnitud de la corriente m depende de tres factores: la probabilidad de apertura del canal, la conductancia unitaria y el n\u00famero de canales presentes en la membrana. En relaci\u00f3n a la densidad de los canales kcnq, a penas se conocen los mecanismos moleculares implicados.
