Pero no existe una definicion del concepto de area de mercado, ni una tecnica de obtencion de dichas areas. Por el contrario, a lo largo de la historia se han formulado muy diversas teorias sobre las que definir el concepto de area de mercado, teorias que se basan en puntos de partida esencialmente diferentes.  partiendo del enfoque teorico sobre el que reilly (1931) estructura su concepto de area de mercado, pero describiendo las proporciones de ventas de los almacenes desde la perspectiva de los consumidores, obtenemos una medida del territorio analizado en terminos de la probabilidad de eleccion del almacen en cuestion, por parte de los individuos residentes en diferentes puntos del territorio, tal y como propone huff (1963). Pero esto nos da pie a que enfoquemos la evaluacion del almacen frente a la competencia que establecen los almacenes del sistema de ventas evaluado, cuando este cuenta con solo dos de ellos.  ademas proponemos una extension de este proceso a situaciones con tres o mas almacenes usando modelos de eleccion discreta y tecnicas de analisis cluster, areas de mercado
