Determinar la frecuencia y el patr\u00f3n de distribuci\u00f3n de las malformaciones cong\u00e9nitas del sistema nervioso central detectadas en el periodo neonatal, 2. Investigar los factores de riesgo maternos asociados.    material y m\u00e9todos: estudio retrospectivo, durante el periodo comprendido entre  enero de  1976 y diciembre 2005, realizado en el servicio de pediatr\u00eda del hospital universitario de guadalajara. Todos los reci\u00e9n nacidos en el hospital de guadalajara con malformaciones cong\u00e9nitas del sistema nervioso central fueron incluidos en el estudio.  Se recogieron variables demogr\u00e1ficas, el tipo de malformaci\u00f3n y los factores de riesgo asociados.  resultados: durante el periodo de estudio se recogieron 34 ni\u00f1os con malformaciones cong\u00e9nitas del sistema nervioso central, representando una preValencia de 1 cada 1000 nacidos vivos.   Las anomal\u00edas m\u00e1s frecuentes son los defectos del tubo neural, en un 60% de los casos. Los defectos m\u00e1s frecuentes del tubo neural fueron la espina b\u00edfida y los cefaloceles. Los factores de riesgo que hallamos fueron  las infecciones durante la gestaci\u00f3n, la radiaci\u00f3n ionizante, la toma de algunos f\u00e1rmacos, la falta de suplementaci\u00f3n con \u00e1cido f\u00f3lico y la consanguinidad.  conclusiones: los defectos del tubo neural representan los defectos del sistema nervioso central m\u00e1s comunes detectados en nuestro estudio.
