El experimento, situado en el cern, se basa en el efecto primakoff que los axiones sufren en presencia del campo magn\u00e9tico de 9 tesla que proporciona su im\u00e1n. Cast es capaz de seguir el sol al amanecer y al atardecer durante una hora y media, per\u00edodo en el que los detectores instalados a ambos lados del im\u00e1n buscan las trazas de rayos x originadas en la conversi\u00f3n. A lo largo de la fase i de cast el detector tpc (time projection chamber) de cast busc\u00f3 axiones con masas de hasta 0.02 ev. Por medio del uso de helio-4 como gas tamp\u00f3n, la segunda fase de cast es capaz de restaurar la coherencia de la conversi\u00f3n primakoff, habilitando as\u00ed la b\u00fasqueda de axiones de hasta 0.39 ev de masa.
