Esta mol\u00e9cula se genera como subproducto en un gran n\u00famero de reacciones anab\u00f3licas. Hasta hace poco, se pensaba que el ppi era hidrolizado \u00fanicamente por las pirofosfatasas solubles (sppasas), liber\u00e1ndose la energ\u00eda del enlace pirofosfato en forma de calor [lahti y col. 1988]. Se han descubierto adem\u00e1s prote\u00ednas integrales de membrana que son capaces de acoplar la hidr\u00f3lisis del ppi a la generaci\u00f3n de un gradiente de protones a trav\u00e9s de una membrana, reciclando as\u00ed parte de la energ\u00eda contenida en el enlace pirofosfato [baltscheffsky y baltscheffsky 1992]. Estudios recientes indican que estas prote\u00ednas -denominadas pirofosfatasas inorg\u00e1nicas translocadoras de prot\u00f3n (h+-ppasas o v-ppasas)- se encuentran presentes en diferentes organismos de muy diversos or\u00edgenes filogen\u00e9ticos, como eubacterias, arqueas, plantas superiores y diversos protistas fotosint\u00e9ticos y no fotosint\u00e9ticos, entre ellos, algunos par\u00e1sitos de humanos [rea y poole 1993, baltscheffsky y col. 1999, maeshima 2000, p\u00e9rez-casti\u00f1eira y col. 2001a, mcintosh y vaidya 2002]. Por su parte, no se han descrito prote\u00ednas de este tipo en c\u00e9lulas animales y hongos. Existen dos grandes grupos de h+-ppasas seg\u00fan requieran o no k+ para desarrollar su actividad m\u00e1xima: las independientes y las estimuladas por k+. En organismos procari\u00f3ticos, la h+-ppasa mejor estudiada es la de la bacteria p\u00farpura no sulfurosa rhodospirillum rubrum. Esta h+-ppasa se encuentra asociada a invaginaciones de la membrana plasm\u00e1tica, denominadas cromat\u00f3foros, donde se localiza tambi\u00e9n la maquinaria fotosint\u00e9tica y, como la de la mayor\u00eda de los organismos procari\u00f3ticos, es independiente de k+ [nyr\u00e9n y col. 1984].
