El gen sxl ha sido caracterizado fuera del g\u00e9nero drosophila en megaselia scalaris, musca domestica, ceratitis capitata y  chrysomya rufifacies -suborden brachycera- y en sciara ocellaris -suborden nematocera-. En sciara ocellaris el sexo depende de la constituci\u00f3n cromos\u00f3mica de los cigotos: las hembras son xx y los machos son x0 y la compensaci\u00f3n de dosis se resuelve mediante la hipertranscripci\u00f3n del cromosoma x de los machos. En el resto de las especies el sexo depende de un factor determinante de masculinidad o de un factor materno y el fen\u00f3meno de compensaci\u00f3n de dosis no es necesario puesto que el cromosoma x es pr\u00e1cticamente inerte desde el punto de vista gen\u00e9tico, o carecen de cromosomas sexuales. En todas estas especies sxl no muestra una regulaci\u00f3n espec\u00edfica para el sexo puesto que existe prote\u00edna sxl en machos y hembras, en contra de lo que suecede en drosophila, donde solamente en las hembras existe prote\u00edna sxl.  el conocimiento de la evoluci\u00f3n de los mecanismos de determinaci\u00f3n sexual y compensaci\u00f3n de dosis requiere la caracterizaci\u00f3n de los genes que gobiernan dichos procesos en otras especies de d\u00edpteros. Con este objetivo hemos procedido al aislamiento y caracterizaci\u00f3n del gen sxl en tres especies de d\u00edpteros pertenecientes al suborden nematocera (sciara coprophila, rhynchosciara americana y trichosia pubescens).  en estas especies, el sexo depende de la constituci\u00f3n cromos\u00f3mica del cigoto y la compensaci\u00f3n de dosis se resuelve mediante la hipertranscripci\u00f3n del cromosoma x de los machos como suceden drosophila.  el gen sxl de estas tres especies genera un \u00fanico transcrito que codifica para una prote\u00edna presente en machos y hembras.
