Los principales factores de virulencia de estas cepas lo constituyen unas potentes citotoxinas conocidas como toxinas shiga (codificadas por genes stx en el genoma de bacteri\u00f3fagos atemperados), una prote\u00edna de membrana externa (intimina), responsable de la adhesi\u00f3n de la bacteria al epitelio intestinal y una enterohemosilina. La transmisi\u00f3n horizontal de los genes stx mediada por bacteri\u00f3fagos, podr\u00eda explicar la elevada diversidad de serotipos de e.Coli portadores de estos genes.  el objetivo de la tesis doctoral fue el an\u00e1lisis de la preValencia del gen stx2 en ambientes acu\u00e1ticos y la detecci\u00f3n, el aislamiento y la caracterizaci\u00f3n de las bacterias portadoras del gen, as\u00ed como el estudio de los bacteri\u00f3fagos portadores del gen stx2 integrados en estas bacterias.  se dise\u00f1\u00f3 un m\u00e9todo basado en la combinaci\u00f3n del nmp y la pcr anidada utilizando cebadores espec\u00edficos para la subunidad a del gen stx2 para el estudio de preValencia. Se analizaron aguas residuales crudas municipales y de mataderos. El gen stx2 fue detectado en todas las muestras, observ\u00e1ndose una relaci\u00f3n constante entre el n\u00famero estimado de cepas stx2 estimado independientemente del origen de la muestra.  se caracterizaron 114 cepas portadoras del gen stx2 aisladas mediante el m\u00e9todos de la hibridaci\u00f3n colonial utilizando  agar chromocult y una sonda espec\u00edfica el gen stx2. As\u00edmismo, se aislaron 72 cepas de e.Coli o157 utilizando la t\u00e9cnica de la separaci\u00f3n inmunomagn\u00e9tica, la siembra en el medio selectivo ct-smac y la detecci\u00f3n inmunol\u00f3gica del ant\u00edgeno o157. Tambi\u00e9n se analiz\u00f3 el patr\u00f3n de digesti\u00f3n del lipopolisac\u00e1rido.
