Por un lado, parte del trabajo se ha centrado en el estudio del efecto de distintos sustratos en el proceso. Los cap\u00edtulos 4, 5 y 6 muestran los estudios obtenidos en este campo.  en el cap\u00edtulo 4 se muestra la evoluci\u00f3n de un reactor discontinuo secuencial (sbr) que fue inoculado con lodos de una estaci\u00f3n depuradora de aguas residuales (edar) y al que se le suministro propionato como \u00fanica fuente de carbono. se realiz\u00f3 un seguimiento microbiol\u00f3gico de la comunidad microbiana del reactor y se elaboraron distintos experimentos, comprobando la respuesta de los microorganismos a distintas concentraciones de propionato. As\u00ed mismo, tambi\u00e9n se condujeron experimentos evaluando otro sustrato, el acetato, que hasta este momento era el sustrato habitual en los trabajos descritos en la literatura. El efecto del control del ph tambi\u00e9n fue analizado en este cap\u00edtulo y se obtuvo un valor de 7.5 como valor \u00f3ptimo de trabajo. un modelo cin\u00e9tico y estequiom\u00e9trico basado en el modelo asm2d fue calibrado y validado con los experimentos elaborados con propionato y acetato. Con este reactor se observa una gran proliferaci\u00f3n de orgnismos acumuladores de f\u00f3sforo (pao) en detrimento de sus competidores m\u00e1s directos, los organismos acumuladores de glic\u00f3geno (gao).  el cap\u00edtulo 5, de resultados compara la evoluci\u00f3n de los sbr inoculados con el mismo fango procedente de la misma edar. Uno de los sbr trabaja con proionato y el otro con acetato como \u00fanica fuente de carbono. El sbr trabajando con propionato presenta mayor capacidad de eliminaci\u00f3n de f\u00f3sforo debido al mayor p\u00ed\u00b2rcentaje de las pao en el reactor.
