De cat\u00f3lico ortodoxo, aranguren pasa a considerarse cristiano heterodoxo, pero no porque su pensamiento religioso o su propia religiosidad pierdan intensidad, sino porque descubre la entra\u00f1a cristiana del catolicismo y a ella se remite en un denodado intento de hacer m\u00e1s aut\u00e9ntico el catolicismo espa\u00f1ol. En efecto, aranguren aboga por un \u00abcatolicismo existencial\u00bb, cristianismo anclado en la vida, frente al catolicismo pol\u00edtico y beligerante que se viv\u00eda en espa\u00f1a durante el r\u00e9gimen de franco.  en su \u00e9tica, aranguren afirma que la \u00e9tica se abre a la religi\u00f3n. Y esto no s\u00f3lo cuando la moral roza el sentido de la vida o remite a la escatolog\u00eda, sino tambi\u00e9n partiendo de la misma estructura moral del hombre. Por su moralidad intr\u00ednseca, el ser humano est\u00e1 abierto al misterio; por su \u00abversi\u00f3n constitutiva y radical a la realidad\u00bb, como dir\u00eda zubiri, en cuya antropolog\u00eda filos\u00f3fica se basa aranguren, el hombre se abre a la religi\u00f3n. La vocaci\u00f3n, considerada como sentido unitario de la propia vida, es central en el pensamiento religioso arangureniano, en este punto con influencias de ortega.  jos\u00e9 luis aranguren es un pensador religioso, pero no siempre un fil\u00f3sofo de la religi\u00f3n. En su catolicismo y protestantismo como formas de existencia ejerce de fil\u00f3sofo de la religi\u00f3n porque la obra responde a las caracter\u00edsticas de reflexi\u00f3n cr\u00edtica, abierta,
