Mutaciones en alguno de sus miembros son responsables de aminoacidurias hereditarias, como  la lisinuria con intolerancia a prote\u00ednas (lpi) o la cistinuria.  al inicio de esta tesis, nos propusimos identificar alguna nueva subunidad ligera humana de esta familia. Mediante b\u00fasqueda por homolog\u00eda de secuencia se don\u00f3 el cdna correspondiente a una nueva prote\u00edna altamente hom\u00f3loga a una prote\u00edna de rat\u00f3n asociada al sistema de transporte xc-. La caracterizaci\u00f3n funcional confirm\u00f3 que xct humano, en combinaci\u00f3n con 4f2hc, induce una actividad de transporte de cistina y glutamato, con sodio-independencia (sistema xc-). Los perfiles de captaci\u00f3n de los sustratos en funci\u00f3n del ph del medio de transporte indican que tanto el l-glutamato como la l-cistina  son transportados de forma ani\u00f3nica, cada uno con una carga negativa neta. por experimentos de salida de sustrato se determin\u00f3 el car\u00e1cter intercambiador de este transportador, con una estequiometr\u00eda de 1:1.El patr\u00f3n de expresi\u00f3n de xct humano por northem blot muestra una ligera banda presente \u00fanicamente en cerebro. Experimentos de rt-pcr tambi\u00e9n resultaron positivos para los islotes  pancre\u00e1ticos y l\u00edneas celulares correspondientes a l\u00ednias epiteliales y tumorales, mientras ri\u00f1\u00f3n e h\u00edgado no mostraron ninguna se\u00f1al. El papel fisiol\u00f3gico de xct parece estar implicado en la captaci\u00f3n de cistina  para la s\u00edntesis de glutati\u00f3n y su mantenimiento, d\u00e1ndole un papel relevante en situaciones de estr\u00e9s oxidativo.  a continuaci\u00f3n se abord\u00f3 la determinaci\u00f3n de la topolog\u00eda de xct como modelo de subunidad ligera. Experimentos de inmunodetecci\u00f3n evidencian la localizaci\u00f3n intracelular de los dos extremos de la prote\u00edna.
