Al mismo tiempo se llevo a cabo un estudio de diferentes metodos de recuento y deteccion de coliformes.  los resultados demostraron que en el area rural gallega se da una elevada probabilidad de consumir agua subterranea no apta. Aunque esta probabilidad es menor en los nucleos urbanos, en estos tambien se observaron problemas de potabilizacion. A pesar de que las aguas destinadas al cultivo de moluscos presentaron un nivel de contaminacion relativamente bajo, los mejillones cultivados en la mayoria de las zonas requieren un proceso de depuracion para ser destinados al consumo humano directo.  el metodo mas adecuado para detectar coliformes totales, en aguas superficiales, y e. Coli, en las superficiales y tratadas, fue el autoanalisis colilert. El mas sensible para detectar coliformes totales y fecales en aguas tratadas, fue el de filtracion sobre membrana empleando como medio de cultivo mt7. Por ultimo, el metodo de fermentacion en tubo descrito en el \u00ablaboratory procedures.
