Dicha bacteria es un bacilo gram negativo que se caracteriza por ser un diazotroforo de vida libre. Su genoma, con un tama\u00f1o de 3.574 kb, est\u00e1 constituido por un cromosoma circular y dos pl\u00e1smidos de 619 y 70 kb.     halomonas maura s-30 sintetiza un eps denominado maurano con importantes propiedades que lo hacen \u00fatil para su empleo en distintos campos de la industria. Entre estas propiedades funcionales destaca el car\u00e1cter viscoso, pseudopl\u00e1stico y tixotr\u00f3pico de sus preparaciones acuosas y su actividad emulgente sobre distintas fases oleasas, as\u00ed como la estabilidad de tales preparaciones acuosas en condiciones de ph extremo y elevada concentraci\u00f3n de solutos. Adem\u00e1s, el maurano, es un pol\u00edmero de naturaleza ani\u00f3nica, por lo que es capaz de captar metales pesados.     en esta tesis doctoral se aborda el estudio de los determinantes g\u00e9nicos responsables de la bios\u00edntesis del maurano. El cl\u00faster eps de halomonas maura s-30 ha sido secuenciado en el mutante deficiente en la s\u00edntesis de eps, denominado tk71 y hasta el momento han sido identificado diez genes. los genes epsa, epsb, epsc y epsj est\u00e1n implicados en el transporte y polimerizaci\u00f3n del maurano; la prote\u00edna epsc regula la longitud de la cadena hidrocarbonada. Los genes epsd, epse, epsf, epsg y epsh son responsables de la adici\u00f3n de sustituyentes sulfato; la prote\u00edna epse es un regulador del proceso de sulfataci\u00f3n. Tambi\u00e9n se ha identificado una glicosiltransferasa, codificada por el gen epsi, implicada en la s\u00edntesis de unidades oligosacar\u00eddicas.      los genes descritos forman parte de una misma unidad transcripcional dirigida por un promotor localizado delante del gen epsa. Mediante fusi\u00f3n transcripcional del gen lacz al gen epsa, seha comprobado que la m\u00e1xima expresi\u00f3n de los genes eps tiene lugar a concentraciones salinas del 5% (p\/v) y en fase
