Estas frecuencias son muy apropiadas para aplicaciones de creaci\u00f3n de im\u00e1genes (\u00abimaging\u00bb) debido a las diferentes propiedades de los materiales con respecto a las que presentan a frecuencias \u00f3pticas. El uso de antenas planas para estas aplicaciones, lo cual ser\u00eda la opci\u00f3n preferida en cuanto a coste y complejidad de fabricaci\u00f3n puede verse limitado debido a las p\u00e9rdidas causadas por la excitaci\u00f3n de ondas de sustrato. Estos problemas se pueden superar mediante el uso de la tecnolog\u00eda ebg, dado que dichos modos son inhibidos en estas estructuras peri\u00f3dicas.  a pesar de que algunas demostraciones preliminares del uso de la tecnolog\u00eda ebg para estas aplicaciones ya han tenido lugar, \u00e9stas pueden considerarse como meras pruebas de concepto. El prop\u00f3sito de esta tesis ha sido tratar de superar este estado inicial y utilizar configuraciones basadas en esta tecnolog\u00eda para el dise\u00f1o de receptores. En particular, se han estudiado varios aspectos relacionados con el dise\u00f1o de receptores a frecuencias de milim\u00e9tricas implementando tecnolog\u00eda ebg.  primeramente se han estudiado las caracter\u00edsticas principales de los substratos basados en tecnolog\u00eda ebg. Para ello, se han considerado dos estructuras ebg, el \u00abwoodpile\u00bb y la estructura de fan. Con respecto a los materiales diel\u00e9ctricos utilizados para su construcci\u00f3n, se han utilizado silicio y titanato de zr\/sn, zzt. El uso de un material de elevada constante diel\u00e9ctrica es de gran inter\u00e9s, ya que permite la reducci\u00f3n del tama\u00f1o del ebg y el aumento de su ancho de banda. Se han estudiado tanto la impedancia de entrada como el diagrama de radiaci\u00f3n de las configuraciones para las diferentes posiciones de un dipolo sobre el substrato ebg.
