A este nivel, el comportament cu\u00e1ntico juega un papel indudable, de manera que las propiedades de estos sistemas no son escalables respecto al comportamiento macrosc\u00f3pico.  en esta tesis nos hemos centrado en la estabilidad de nanohilos y nanoislas met\u00e1licas, calculando su energ\u00eda mediante la teor\u00eda del funcional de la densidad (dft). Hemos utilizado modelos simples, tipo \u00abjellium\u00bb que simplifican considerablemente el problema, ya que consideran los iones como un continuo homog\u00e9neo de carga positiva, pero por otra parte permiten obtener conclusiones importantes a cerca de las tendencias en el comportamiento de estos sistemas.  el estudio de nanohilos met\u00e1licos est\u00e1 motivado por experimentos realizados con la t\u00e9cnica mcbj (mechanically controlable break junction), en la cual se pueden estudiar las geometr\u00edas de los manohilos formados junto con otras propiedades mec\u00e1nicas y de transporte. Hemos puesto especial \u00e9nfasis en las soluciones estables o radios m\u00e1gicos.  la parte de las nanoislas o l\u00e1minas ultrafinas est\u00e1 motivada por experimentos realizados con sts (scanning tunneling spectroscopy) sobre islas de pb crecidas sobre cu(111), en los que se ha probado la existencia de islas de determinados espesores que son especialmente estables.
