En este sentido, se ha estudiado el metabolismo del lactato, comparandolo con el del 3-hidroxibutirato, de cuyo contraste se han extraido valiosas consideraciones. Se ocupo especialmente del estudio del funcionamiento de las lanzaderas de carbonos, es decir, aquellos mecanismos de transporte de carbonos entre la mitocondria y el citosol, puesto que estos sistemas podrian participar, asimismo, en el trafico de sustratos entre neuronas y astrocitos.  nuestros resultados indican que la lanzadera del citrato funciona en su totalidad en las neuronas, mientras que en astrocitos esta, probablemente, destinada a la exportacion de citrato hacia las neuronas. Asimismo, la lanzadera del n-acetil-l-aspartato no se utiliza con fines lipogenicos en ninguna de las celulas estudiadas, tratandose, por consiguiente, de un sistema de transporte de grupos acetilos con fines especificos. Tomados en su conjunto, los resultados sugieren la existencia de una activa colaboracion entre neuronas y astrocitos, en la que las primeras reciben n-acetil-l-aspartato y citrato de los astrocitos, mientras que las neuronas envian a los astrocitos el acetato sobrante. La adquisicion del n-acetil-l-aspartato y del citrato enviado por los astrocitos, permite a las neuronas la anaplerosis de su ciclo de los acidos tricarboxilicos, preparandolo para la sintesis de
