Esta evoluci\u00f3n ha provocado que el proceso de dise\u00f1o se base m\u00e1s en la capacidad de desarrollar y gestionar dise\u00f1os muy grandes que en la habilidad de realizar circuitos \u00f3ptimos que utilicen la m\u00ednima cantidad de recursos. En la actualidad es posible integrar sistemas completos en un solo circuito (systems on chip) incluyendo los diferentes componentes, normalmente uno o varios microprocesadores, memorias, perif\u00e9ricos y l\u00f3gica adicional bajo un solo encapsulado. Para el dise\u00f1o de circuitos tan grandes, ha sido de vital importancia la aparici\u00f3n de t\u00e9cnicas de dise\u00f1o basadas en lenguajes de descripci\u00f3n de hardware (vhdl, verilog).  dado que un dise\u00f1o descrito mediante un lenguaje de descripci\u00f3n de hardware es, desde un punto de vista funcional, independiente de la tecnolog\u00eda en la que se implemente, es posible realizar su implementaci\u00f3n en circuitos programables (fpgas) montados en placas dise\u00f1adas al efecto para verificar su correcto funcionamiento antes de llevar a cabo la implementaci\u00f3n en la tecnolog\u00eda final.  en sistemas basados en fpgas, ya sean prototipos para emulaci\u00f3n o sistemas implementados mediante fpgas, las t\u00e9cnicas cl\u00e1sicas de depuraci\u00f3n de circuitos resultan poco adecuadas. La posibilidad de uso de osciloscopios o analizadores l\u00f3gicos es limitada, debido a dos causas principales. En primer lugar, la capacidad de los dispositivos puede llegar a ser tan grande que la inmensa mayor\u00eda de las se\u00f1ales del sistema estar\u00e1n contenidas dentro de las fpgas, de modo que no son observables. En segundo lugar, los encapsulados actuales tienen un gran n\u00famero de terminales y, salvo en los modelos m\u00e1s peque\u00f1os, es f\u00edsicamente imposible conectar sondas para su observaci\u00f3n.
