Aparte de su inter\u00e9s b\u00e1sico en la profundizaci\u00f3n del conocimiento de la fisiolog\u00e1i celular existen interesantes palicaciones tecnol\u00f3gicas encaminadas a mejorar los rendimientos de obtenci\u00f3n de rote\u00ednas recombinantes de inter\u00e9s farmacol\u00f3gico. Este inter\u00e9s se hace m\u00e1s evidente, si cabe, en el caso de bacterias gram-positivas, y en especial del g\u00e9nero streptomyces, por su notable capacidad para secretar prote\u00ednas al medio extracelular. las especies de este g\u00e9nero bacteriano han sido ampliamente utilizadas por la industria farmac\u00e9utica en la producci\u00f3n de metabolitos secundarios, principalemente antibi\u00f3ticos, por lo que sus requerimientos a nivel de fermentaciones industriales son bien conocidos.  aproximadamente el 30% de las prote\u00ednas sintetizadas en una bacteria son translocadas y se localizan en le periplasma o en el exterior celular, asociadas o no a la membrana. La mayor parte de ellas alcanzan su destino final siguiendo la ruta de secreci\u00f3n general, integrada por los factores sec (secreci\u00f3n sec-dependiente), cuyo estudio ha sido llevado a cabo principalmente en la bacteria gram-negativa escherichia coli. En e. Coli las prote\u00ednas secretadas se acumulan normalemente en el espacio peripl\u00e1smico, y son liberadas por shock osm\u00f3tico o por tratamiento con cloroformo. Estos tratamientos pueden inactivas las prote\u00ednas y permiten la salida de material intracelular no deseable. En las bacterias gram-positivas las prote\u00ednas son secretadas directamente al medio de cultivo separ\u00e1ndose muy f\u00e1cilmente de las c\u00e9lulas productoras.  los componentes centrales del sistema de secreci\u00f3n de bacterias gram-positivas y gram-negativas muestran un elevado grado de conservaci\u00f3n, esto sugiere una funci\u00f3n y un modo de actuar similar.
