Incluso hoy d\u00eda, no son pocos los modelos ecol\u00f3gicos que, por simplificaci\u00f3n, consideran que los organismos y las variables f\u00edsico-qu\u00edmicas se distribuyen en el ambiente seg\u00fan patrones aleatorios u uniforme. No obstante, estas asunciones son poco realistas y resulta axiom\u00e1tico en ecolog\u00eda que los ecosistemas que los ecosistemas se estructuran y organizan en el tiempo y en el espacio.  en el caso de los ecosistemas acu\u00e1ticos, la distribuci\u00f3n espacial de las comunidades planct\u00f3nicas suele adoptar patrones complejos y heterog\u00e9neos, generalmente relacionados con la hidrodin\u00e1mica del sistema. Los gradientes y las manchas constituyen las estructuras espaciales m\u00e1s frecuentemente encontradas en lagos y embalses.  en este tipo de ecosistema existe todo un rango de interacciones bottom-up y top-down que operan a distintas escalas espaciales y temporales, acoplando de esta manera el ambiente f\u00edsico, qu\u00edmico y biol\u00f3gico. El modelo de ecosistemas resultante es especialmente din\u00e1mico y complejo.  la heterogenecidad espacial constituye, de forma t\u00e1cita o expl\u00edcita, un elemento central en gran n\u00famero de teor\u00edas y modelos ecol\u00f3gicos. Adem\u00e1s, es ampliamente reconocida su importancia como agente estabilizador de los ecosistemas.  por otra parte, el reconocimiento de la heterogeneidad en la distribuci\u00f3n espacial (tanto vertical como horizontal) del planct\u00f3n en embalses de suministro p\u00fablico resulta de especial inter\u00e9s para un adecuado dise\u00f1o de muestreos y campa\u00f1as de seguimiento de la calidad del agua embalsada y constituye, por tanto, una herramienta de enorme inter\u00e9s en la gesti\u00f3n del agua.  en esta tesis doctoral se ha estudiado la cin\u00e1mica espacial de
