La forma y color del nudibranquio son similares a las de la esponja presa, ampliamente distribuida en las aguas someras del mar mediterr\u00e1neo. La esponja ircinia variabilis contiene los sesterterpenos palinurin y variabilin formados por 25 \u00e1tomos de carbono con un anillo furano \u00edY-sustituido y un \u00e1cido  tetr\u00f3nico en sus extremos. sin embargo, recientemente, se ha descrito un polimorfismo qu\u00edmico para ircinia variabilis. Algunos especimenes contienen palinurin o variabilin mientras que otros  poseen una mezcla de ambos sesterterpenos. Durante el estudio de estas esponjas mediterr\u00e1neas se identific\u00f3 en ircinia fasciculata un sesterterpeno lineal relacionado con la  palinurin y variabilin, fasciculatin, lo que desde un punto de vista  taxon\u00f3mico la relaciona estrechamente con ircinia variabilis. Discodoris indecora  muestra un comportamiento t\u00edpico de defensa cuando es molestado, secretando un fluido blanco y abundante que contiene grandes cantidades de palinurin y variabilin. Probablemente, el nudibranquio puede transferir los metabolitos de la esponja desde las gl\u00e1ndulas digestivas hasta las gl\u00e1ndulas del manto. Las micrograf\u00edas electr\u00f3nicas del manto del nudibranquio mostraron la presencia de gl\u00e1ndulas unicelulares caracterizadas por una vacuola cil\u00edndrica con un gran n\u00facleo en la base. las gl\u00e1ndulas se concentraron en los tub\u00e9rculos m\u00e1s prominentes del manto dorsal. Probablemente, los metabolitos de la esponja se almacenan en estas gl\u00e1ndulas.  la esponja dysidea fragilis emite un fluido defensivo blanco cuando es molestada. Las micrograf\u00edas electr\u00f3nicas de este fluido revelaron la presencia de c\u00e9lulas vesiculares intactas junto a otro material amorfo. Las c\u00e9lulas disociadas poseen una forma m\u00e1s redondeada pero mantienen la misma ultraestructura de las c\u00e9lulas observadas en las secciones ultrafinas de
