Todos los coratoneoides se pueden considerar formalmente derivados de la estructura c40 m\u00e1s sencilla, mediante diversas modificaciones, siendo com\u00fan para todos ellos una cadena poli\u00e9nica central, que define gran parte de sus caracter\u00edsticas.  debido a su poder antioxidante as\u00ed como su participaci\u00f3n en procesos de captaci\u00f3n de energ\u00eda de la luz y fotoprotecci\u00f3n, se ha planteado el desarrollo de una metodolog\u00eda sint\u00e9tica que permita, en primer lugar, la preparaci\u00f3n de carotenoides sim\u00e9tricos c40, empleando como etapa clave la formaci\u00f3n de enlaces csp2-csp2 en la construcci\u00f3n del esqueleto completo de carotenoide. a continuaci\u00f3n, bas\u00e1ndose en los mismos principios sint\u00e9ticos, se preparar\u00e1n carotenoides altamente funcionalizados como peridinina y pirroxantina.  durante el desarrollo de ambas metodolog\u00edas sint\u00e9ticas se han utilizado diversos tipos de reacciones catalizadas por pd, como reacciones de heck, sonogashira, stille y suzuki, poniendo a prueba  estas herramientas sint\u00e9ticas en la construcci\u00f3n d epolienos de complejidad elevada.
