Lo divino no se opon\u00eda a lo sensible o lo corporal, de modo que para evangelizar a los ind\u00edgenas y para conservar la fe de los conversos, los misioneros -frailes mendicantes- promovieron espacios que, sin gran opulencia, propiciaran espectacularidad lit\u00fargica multisensorial: altares iluminados directamente con luz solar en fechas sagradas, ac\u00fastica impresionante, estabilidad t\u00e9rmica, aromas, etc. El espacio \u00abvac\u00edo\u00bb no es tal, sino un ambiente cuidadosamente rellenado con informaci\u00f3n perceptible.  en la \u00e9poca exist\u00eda una visi\u00f3n de conjunto y de s\u00edntesis hoy dif\u00edcil de captar mediante nuestros enfoques de especializaci\u00f3n extrema. Los ef\u00edmeros rituales y ciertos elementos hoy considerados \u00abdecorativos\u00bb no eran simples a\u00f1adidos al espacio arquitect\u00f3nico permanente, sino concebidos de modo integral y cumpl\u00edan en ocasiones m\u00e1s de una funci\u00f3n, atendiendo especialmente a cualidades de un medio ambiente que ha sufrido profundas alteraciones desde entonces.  la conversi\u00f3n al cristianismo siempre mezcl\u00f3 tradiciones paganas locales. las fiestas de equinoccios y solsticios, afines a tantos pueblos agr\u00edcolas de asia y europa, tambi\u00e9n exist\u00edan en mesoam\u00e9rica, donde s\u00f3lo se hicieron algunas adaptaciones que facilitaron su asimilaci\u00f3n.  los centros de evangelizaci\u00f3n mexicanos fueron construidos en etapas. inicialmente el
