De aqu\u00ed la importancia que tiene la homeostasis del calcio en el correcto funcionamiento celular.  gran parte del ca2+ intracelular est\u00e1 contenido dentro de org\u00e1nulos citoplasm\u00e1ticos que act\u00faan como dep\u00f3sitos intracelulares de ca2+. El almacenamiento del ca2+ dentro de estos dep\u00f3sitos desempe\u00f1a dos funciones importantes: por un lado, constituye un mecanismo de regulaci\u00f3n para el i\u00f3n calcio y, adem\u00e1s, proporciona un potencial de liberaci\u00f3n de ca2+, durante se\u00f1ales fisiol\u00f3gicas. los resultados obtenidos en m\u00fasculo liso vesicular en relaci\u00f3n a las caracter\u00edsticas delos dep\u00f3sitos de ca2+ apuntan a la existencia de un \u00fanico dep\u00f3sito cuyo llenado depende del ca2+ extracelular y de la bomba atpasa serca. Este dep\u00f3sito contiene dos tipos de canlaes de liberaci\u00f3n de ca2+: el canal-receptor de inositol 1,4,5-trifosfato (ip3r) y el canal-receptor de rianodina (ryr). sin embargo, la liberaci\u00f3n de ca2+ a trav\u00e9s de los ip3r, produce efectos funcionales opuestos a los causados por la liberaci\u00f3n desde ryr, sugiriendo una diversidad espacial entre ambos receptores.  para la regulaci\u00f3n de la homeostasis del calcio la c\u00e9lula dispone de distintos mecanismos que controlan, por un lado la entrada y la salida de calcio desde el espacio extracelular y\/o dep\u00f3sitos intracelulares, y por otro los sistemas de transporte activo desde el citosol hacia el medio externo o hacia los dep\u00f3sitos. A finales de los a\u00f1os 80 putney propuso un mecanismo innovador para la entrada del calcio extracelular seg\u00fan el cual el vaciamiento de los dep\u00f3sitos
