Multiresolution models have been developed for curves, surfaces, and solid objects, but there is not any theoretically sound multiresolution model for plane graphs which allows navigating through entities representing the same object al different levels of detail.  the model we have developed in this thesis is a compact framework relating representations of the same plane graph at different scales, from which graphs at the levels of detail required by the user con be extracted, while maintaining the overall combinatorial structure consistent.  the main application of this work relies on the advantages that the model introduces for storing, processing, and visualizing geographic maps in vector format. The multiresolution representation developed in this thesis allows the transmission of maps on the web, both progressively (sending a map al low resolution first, followed  by details that progressively increase the level of detail) and selectively (concentrating the transmission of details on some parts of the map).
