La actividad espec\u00edfica de los ceps normalmente depende de su quiralidad. S\u00f3lo uno de los is\u00f3meros es \u00fatil para un fin determ\u00ednado, mientras que el otro se considera contaminaci\u00f3n. los ceps requeridos por las industrias pueden ser sintetizados qu\u00edm\u00edcamente. Sin embargo, la mayor\u00eda de los compuestos obtenidos por sintesis org\u00e1nica son mezclas rac\u00e9micas que deben ser resueltas hasta sus componentes \u00f3pticamente puros antes de ser utilizados. La resoluci\u00f3n de estos compuestos puede realizarse mediante m\u00e9todos qu\u00edmicos y\/o biol\u00f3gicos, que incluyen la cristalizac\u00ed\u00f3n de sales estereom\u00e9ricas, cristalizaci\u00f3n en disolventes \u00f3pticamente activos, cromatograf\u00eda y\/o m\u00e9todos enzim\u00e1ticos. Todos estos procedimientos tienen muy limitada aplicaci\u00f3n industrial debido a su bajo rendimiento, baja rentabilidad y fuerte efecto contaminante del medio ambiente.  los amino\u00e1cidos \u00f3pticamente puros tienen una gran importancia industrial debido a sus posibilidades de utilizaci\u00f3n en distintos campos, que incluyen la industria farmac\u00e9utica y alimentaria, as\u00ed como en investigaciones bioqu\u00edmicas y microbiol\u00f3gicas. Se ha descrito su uso en la fabricaci\u00f3n de sueros, como aditivos alimentarios, o como intermedios en la preparaci\u00f3n de f\u00e1rmacos, cosm\u00e9ticos, pesticidas, curtidos sint\u00e9ticos y reactivos quirales de aplicaci\u00f3n en s\u00edntesis org\u00e1nica.  los l-amino\u00e1cidos naturales, o proteinog\u00e9nicos, pueden ser obtenidos mediante la fermentaci\u00f3n de cepas microbianas naturales o mutantes. Sin embargo, son necesarios otros m\u00e9todos para la producci\u00f3n  de l-amino\u00e1cidos no naturales y d-amino\u00e1cidos.  existen muy diversos m\u00e9todos de sintesis qu\u00edmica de a-amino\u00e1cidos.
