La asimilacion del nitrato hasta amonio tiene lugar en dos pasos: la reduccion del nitrato a nitrito esta catalizado por el producto del gen nasb, la nitrato reductasa; el paso del nitrtio a amonio esta catalizado por el producto del gen nasa, la nitrito reductasa. Ambas enzimas son inducibles por nitrato y reprimibles por amonio. Esta induccion, aunque mas baja, tambien se observa cuando en el medio hay nitrito o clorato. Los productos de los genes ntra, ntrc y de la region nasr son necesarios para la induccion del operon nasab. La region nasr esta formada por dos genes, nass y nasr. Siendo nasr el primer gen del operon. Ademas de estos elementos reguladores, se requiere de una nitrato reductasa activa o, al menos, unida a su cofactor para que el circuito de induccion por nitrato sea operativo.  la expresion constitutiva del gen nifo tiene dos efectos, uno a nivel de expresion del operon nasab, que se hace mas sensible a la represion por amonio; y otro, a nivel de actividad nitrato reductasa, que disminuye.  en rhizobium fredii hay mas de una nitrato reductasa y de una nitrito reductasa que se expresan en aerobiosis.  los genes nasa y nasb de esta bacteria estan formando parte de la misma unidad transcripcional, en la que nasa es el primer gen, al igual que en a.
