Catalizar la beta-carboxilaci\u00f3n irreversible del fofoenolpiruvato (pep) en presencia de hco3- y mg2+, para producir oxaloacetato (oaa) y pi (chollet et al., 1996), que es r\u00e1pidamente transformado a l-malato, participando \u00e9ste en una gran variedad de contextos metab\u00f3licos. Trabajos previos realizados en nuestro laboratorio pusieron de manifiesto un aumento de la actividad pepc durante la germinaci\u00f3n de la semilla y la regulaci\u00f3n de la enzima por fosforilaci\u00f3n reversible (osuna et al., 1996; gonz\u00e1lez et al., 1998, 2002). A diferencia de las pepc-quinasas estudiadas hasta la fecha, la activaci\u00f3n de la pepc-quinasa implicada en la germinaci\u00f3n no depend\u00eda de s\u00edntesis proteica, sino que se encontraba ya presente en la semilla seca (osuna et al., 1999), sugiri\u00e9ndose que la s\u00edntesis de la pepc-quinasa se realizaba durante la fase de desarrollo y maduraci\u00f3n de la semilla.  los resultados de esta tesis muestran que en cebada durante el desarrollo de la semilla existen dos polip\u00e9ptidos de pepc de 103 y 108 kda de los cuales, la subunidad de 103 kda es constitutiva mientras que la de 108 kd se induce en la etapa final del desarrollo. Los resultados muestran que ambos polip\u00e9ptidos son versiones completas y no contienen los extremos n- y c-terminal incluyendo los \u00faltimos 4 aa antg del c-terminal.
