Si a los estudios de biolog\u00eda molecular se les unen los estudios bioqu\u00edmicos se puede avanzar m\u00e1s r\u00e1pidamente en el conocimiento de la regulaci\u00f3n y, por lo tanto, incrementar la producci\u00f3n. Se seleccion\u00f3 un mutante tras realizar mutag\u00e9nesis con luz uv qu teniendo intactos los genes biosint\u00e9ticos del antibi\u00f3tico no produc\u00eda pimaricina, pero que al complementar con otros mutantes recuperaba la capacidad de producci\u00f3n del mismo. La mutaci\u00f3n deb\u00eda afectar a alg\u00fan gen implicado en la bios\u00edntesis de alguna mol\u00e9cula inductora, identific\u00e1ndose una mol\u00e9cula termoestable, de 3estructura y naturaleza qu\u00edmica diferente a las mol\u00e9culas reguladoras conocidas hasta el momento, al que s se ha denominado ip, cuyo nombre qu\u00edmico es 2,3-diamino-2,3-bis (hidroximetil)-1,4-butanodiol.  el ip adicionado de forma ex\u00f3gena al cultivo induc\u00eda la producci\u00f3n de pimaricina. el ip se comporta como un regulador t\u00edpico de los procesos de \u00abqu\u00f3rum sensing\u00bb. la producci\u00f3n de ip depende del crecimiento del organismo, coincidiendo su bios\u00edntesis con la fase expnencial de crecimiento disparando la producii\u00f3n del antif\u00fangico, al que siempre precede en el tiempo. El ip regula la producci\u00f3n de pimaricina, y adem\u00e1s aumenta la producci\u00f3n de otros antif\u00fangicos producidos por diferentes cepas de streptomyces, pudiendo ser una se\u00f1al com\u00fan entre estas cepas; sin embargo, \u00e9stas no lo producen, lo que puede apuntar a que el ip podr\u00eda pertenecer a una familia de compuestos estructuralmente semejantes, el factor a ejerce una regulaci\u00f3n positiva sobre la producci\u00f3n de pimaricina en s.
