Esta fibrosis se puede producir por dos mecanismos diferentes, la fibrosis intersticial y la fibrosis intraalveolar, siendo \u00e9sta \u00faltima esencial en la remodelaci\u00f3n de la arquitectura pulmonar.  la fibronectina es una prote\u00edna de la matriz extracelular que se detecta en el intersticio del pulm\u00f3n sano. Su expresi\u00f3n aumenta en el da\u00f1o alveolar difuso en fase exudativa y proliferativa, en la neumon\u00eda organizada criptog\u00e9nica y en la fibrosis pulmonar idiop\u00e1tica. Este patr\u00f3n de expresi\u00f3n indica que la fibronectina es una prote\u00edna estructural de la matriz extracelular y una prote\u00edna de la fase aguda  del da\u00f1o pulmonar; su expresi\u00f3n aumentada durante la fase cr\u00f3nica del da\u00f1o pulmonar la convierten, junto al col\u00e1geno, en un constituyente esencial del tejido fibroso estable del da\u00f1o pulmonar cr\u00f3nico.  la tenascina es una prote\u00edna de la matriz extracelular ausente en el intersticio de los pulmones sanos. Su expresi\u00f3n aumenta en las fases m\u00e1s iniciales de la agresi\u00f3n pulmonar, se mantiene durante el proceso de fibrog\u00e9nesis y disminuye cuando la fibrosis tisular est\u00e1 ya establecida; este patr\u00f3n de expresi\u00f3n sugiere que la tenascina es una prote\u00edna de la fase aguda, reguladora y no estructural, que participa en la remodelaci\u00f3n
