Son cosmopolitas, se a\u00edslan com\u00fanmente de suelo, de vegetales y del interior de las viviendas y son contaminantes comunes en  productos alimenticios.  los individuos de la especie aspergiullus flavus (muchas cepas de a.Flavus link ex fries), aspergillus parasiticus speare (la mayor\u00eda de las cepas) y otra especie descrita recientemente, aspergiullos nomius, son los \u00fanicos que poseen la habilidad de producir aflatoxinas. Todos estos hongos han sido clasificados en la secci\u00f3n flavi del g\u00e9nero aspergillus.  debido a su car\u00e1cter ubicuista, los organismos de esta secci\u00f3n flavi, no solo act\u00faan como agentes deteriorantes de los productos que contaminan, sino que tambi\u00e9n, bajo condiciones propicias de sustrato, humedad y temperatura que se dan durante el almacenamiento, algunas cepas son capaces de producir aflotoxinas. Se ha demostrado que estas sustancias resultan hepatot\u00f3xicas, cancer\u00edgenas y mutag\u00e9nicas por ingesti\u00f3n cr\u00f3nica. Estos efectos han sido estudiados en mayor medida para la aflatoxina b1.  adem\u00e1s del inter\u00e9s sanitario de las aflatoxinas, se debe considerar el inter\u00e9s econ\u00f3mico que ocasiona la presencia de aflatoxinas en alimentos, las p\u00e9rdidas econ\u00f3micas son dif\u00edciles de evaluar debido a que son muchos los factores a tener en cuenta al realizar la valoraci\u00f3n. Con el fin de minimizar el impacto econ\u00f3mico, se invierten grandes sumas de dinero en el desarrollo e implementaci\u00f3n de m\u00e9todos de prevenci\u00f3n y control de la presencia de mohos y aflatoxinas en las materias primas y en los productos alimenticios.  la metodolog\u00eda usada com\u00fanmente para el screening de cepas aflatoxig\u00e9ncias consiste en cultivar las cepas en un medio l\u00edquido o s\u00f3lido y la posterior extracci\u00f3n y an\u00e1lisis de la presencia de aflatoxinas mediante t\u00e9cnicas cromatogr\u00e1ficas.
