En la cianobacteria synechocystis sp. Pcc 6803 hemos demostrado la existencia de dos genes que codifican enzimas con actividad glutamina sintetasa, denominados glna y glnn, que codifican para una gs tipo i y gs tipo iii respectivamente. La expresion de ambos genes esta regulada a nivel transcripcional, lo cual se demostro en experimentos de northern blot y mediante fusiones transcripcionales de las regiones promotoras de ambos genes con un gen testigo. La maxima expresion se obtuvo en ambos casos en condiciones de deficiencia de nitrogeno. Otros factores ambientales como la luz incidente y la deficiencia en otros nutrientes tambien afectaron a la transcripcion de ambos genes.  la actividad gs esta tambien regulada a nivel posttranscripcional.
