Entre otros efectos, la melatonina posee capacidad antiproliferativa, antiapopt\u00f3tica, antioxidante e inmunomoduladora. a partir de estos descubrimientos se empez\u00f3 a estudiar con especial con especial inter\u00e9s por su posible valor terap\u00e9utico en el tratamiento de las enfermedades neurodegenerativas y del c\u00e1ncer.  el amino\u00e1cido glutamato es el principal neurotransmisor excitador en el sistema nervioso central. El control de las concentraciones de glutamato en el espacio sin\u00e1ptico es fundamental porque puede ser una fuente de da\u00f1o oxidativo y muerte neuronal, como sucede en algunas enfermedades neurodegenerativas o en el da\u00f1o por isquemia\/reperfusi\u00f3n.  en el presente trabajo analizamos las v\u00edas intracelulares posiblemente implicadas en los efectos neuroprotectores de la melatonina frente a la oxitosis inducida por glutamato en las c\u00e9lulas de hipocampo de rat\u00f3n ht22. apesar de que la melatonina parece actuar en la primera fase del proceso de muerte celular, no previene ni el incremento de estr\u00e9s oxidativo ni el agotamiento de glutation que caracterizan esta primera fase. Sin embargo, previene completamente el estr\u00e9s oxidativo mitocondrial y el incremento de ca2+ que caracterizan la segunda fase del proceso. Nuestros resultados sugieren que la melatonina no previene la oxitosis por medio del secuestro de radicales libres citos\u00f3licos, sino por medio de la inactivaci\u00f3n de la 12-lipoxigenasa, o de efectos antioxidantes espec\u00edficamente a nivel mitocondrial.  por otro lado, la melatonina inhibe la proliferaci\u00f3n de las c\u00e9lulas ht22, fen\u00f3meno que tambi\u00e9n analizamos en el presente estudio. Este efecto est\u00e1 probablemente mediado por la inhibici\u00f3n del factor de transcripci\u00f3n nfkb que se observa o por su antagonismo con el complejo ca2+-calmod<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Datos
