Algunas cepas de bifidobacterias pueden, al menos transitoriamente, colonizar el tracto gastrointestinal. Por tanto, estas  bacterias deben superar barreras fisiol\u00f3gicas como el ph \u00e1cido en el est\u00f3mago, bilis en el intestino y los enzimas digestivos. Dado que las sales biliares son t\u00f3xicas para las c\u00e9lulas, la microbiota intestinal ha tenido que desarrollar estrategias para poder defenderse de la acci\u00f3n t\u00f3xica de estos compuestos. La inhibici\u00f3n de las sales biliares puede ser superada mediante adaptaci\u00f3n progresiva a concentraciones crecientes de estos compuestos. Esta tesis se centr\u00f3 en el estudio de la influencia de la adquisici\u00f3n de resistencia a bilis sobre diversas caracter\u00edsticas fisiol\u00f3gicas de las bifidobacterias.  a partir de 29 cepas del g\u00e9nero bifidobacterium se obtuvieron 5 derivados resistentes, uno de ellos frente a colato y los otros cuatro frente a ox gall. estos derivados fueron capaces de resistir concentraciones de colato s\u00f3dico y ox gall superiores a 8 g\/l y 20 g\/l, respectivamente. La adquisici\u00f3n de resistencia estable a sales biliares condujo en la mayor\u00eda de los casos a un aumento concomitante de la tolerancia al ph \u00e1cido y de la resistencia frente a otras sales biliares conjugadas y desconjugadas. Los derivados resistentes tambi\u00e9n mostraron un incremento de los niveles de actividad hidrolasa frente a sales conjugadas secundarias, una mayor capacidad de adhesi\u00f3n a mucus intestinal humano y cambios en la hidrofobicidad celular.
