El aislamiento y la caracterizaci\u00f3n de mutantes que manifiesten alteraciones en sus respuestas a la salinidad, con el objetivo de identificar los correspondientes genes y eventualmente manipularlos, podr\u00eda aportar soluciones a este problema. Con la intenci\u00f3n de contribuir a la resoluci\u00f3n de este problema, se aislaron en el laboratorio de j.L. Micol estirpes mutantes de arabidopsis thaliana capaces de germinar en presencia de altas concentraciones salinas. A partir del escrutinio de 675.500 semillas, se aislaron 17 l\u00edneas mutantes que manifestaban germinaci\u00f3n halotolerante, y fueron asignadas a 5 grupos de complementaci\u00f3n a los que se denomin\u00f3 salobre\u00f1o1 a 5 (sa\u00f11 a 5).  hemos caracterizado a niveles morfol\u00f3gico, molecular y fisiol\u00f3gico 15 mutantes de arabidopsis thaliana, \u00e1 de ellos aislados anteriormente en el laboratorio de j.L. Micol en base a su germinaci\u00f3n halotolerante. Estos mutantes pertenecen a tres grupos de complementaci\u00f3n (sa\u00f11, sa\u00f13 y sa\u00f14). Hemos demostrado que estos tres genes sa\u00f1 codifican enzimas implicadas en la s\u00edntesis del \u00e1cido absc\u00edsico (aba), lo que confirma la importancia de esta fitohormona en la percepci\u00f3n del estr\u00e9s salino y sugiere que la manipulaci\u00f3n de su ruta biosint\u00e9tica podr\u00eda permitir la modulaci\u00f3n de la halotolerancia en las plantas.  hemos clonado posicionalmente las mutaciones sa\u00f11, demostrando que el gen sa\u00f11 es aba1, cuyo producto es la zeaxantina epoxidasa, la enzima que cataliza las primeras etapas de la ruta de s\u00edntesjs del aba.  hemos caracterizado estructuralmente nueve alelos aba1, y correlacionado su naturaleza molecular con sus efectos fenot\u00edpicos. El an\u00e1lisis de su fenotipo morfol\u00f3gico, celular y fisiol\u00f3gico sugiere que el aba end\u00f3geno promueve el desarrollo vegetativo en ausencia de estr\u00e9s.
