El an\u00e1lisis hist\u00f3rico de esta instituci\u00f3n es de car\u00e1cter global y abarca numerosas facetas de actuaci\u00f3n del colegio sevillano. Los cap\u00edtulos en los que se divide este trabajo de investigaci\u00f3n centran su atenci\u00f3n en parcelas como los requisitos de entrada en el seminario, la formaci\u00f3n recibida por los colegiales de san telmo, los embarques realizados por los colegiales, los ex\u00e1menes y dem\u00e1s circunstancias que rodearon a la instrucci\u00f3n de los pilotos santelmistas,m las condiciones econ\u00f3micas en las que se movi\u00f3 el colegio sevillano y la gesti\u00f3n llevada a cabo, la entrada de muchachos nobles en el proyecto educativo de san telmo, el an\u00e1lisis del personal que intervino en el establecimiento, o las distintas inspecciones realizadas sobre la instituci\u00f3n.  por otro lado, la universidad de mareantes fue una corporaci\u00f3n nacida en el siglo xvi (1569-1793), que agrupaba a los pilotos, maestres y due\u00f1os de naos de la carrera de indias.
