Isabel <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>La fotocat\u00e1lisis heterog\u00e9nea se perfila como una de las nuevas tecnolog\u00edas sostenibles potencialmente m\u00e1s eficientes para el tratamiento de contaminantes no biodegradables. Esta t\u00e9cnica se basa en las propiedades fotocatal\u00edticas de un semiconductor inocuo tal como el tio2. El semiconductor en suspensi\u00f3n acuosa, y bajo irradiaci\u00f3n a longitudes de onda adecuadas, genera radicales capaces de mineralizar contaminantes biorecalcitrantes, incluso cuando estos se encuentran a bajas concentraciones. Sin embargo, la implementaci\u00f3n de la fotocat\u00e1lisis heterog\u00e9nea para el tratamiento de aguas residuales a gran escala requiere optimizar ciertos par\u00e1metros, tales como la del rendimiento qu\u00e1ntico y la eficiencia energ\u00e9tica.  la formaci\u00f3n de \u00e1cidos carbox\u00edlicos de cadena corta durante la degradaci\u00f3n de compuestos arom\u00e1ticos, en sistemas fotocatal\u00edticos, es un hecho conocido aunque relativamente poco estudiado. El \u00e1cido maleico es un modelo adecuado para estudiar este tipo de intermedios de mineralizaci\u00f3n. Los resultados que se presentan en este trabajo muestran que la formaci\u00f3n de \u00e1cido maleico puede tener una incidencia importante en el rendimiento de detoxificaci\u00f3n de un medio acuoso tratado mediante un proceso de fotocat\u00e1lisis heterog\u00e9nea. el \u00e1cido maleico compite eficientemente por los lugares de adsorci\u00f3n superficiales del tio2. Tal capacidad adquiere gran mportancia debido principalmente a dos aspectos.  en primer lugar, el \u00e1cido maleico es un atrapador de huecos m\u00e1s eficiente que los grupos hidroxilo superficiales. En segundo lugar, el \u00e1cido maleico adsorbido puede actuar como centro de recombinaci\u00f3n del par electr\u00f3n-hueco, en detrimento el rendimiento cu\u00e1ntico fotocatal\u00edtico.  la modificaci\u00f3n del tio2 en condiciones suaves, mediante la simple adsorci\u00f3n de fe(iii) o al(iii), se propone en este trabajo como una metodologi\u00e1 adecuada para incrementar la eficiencia de la fotocat\u00e1lisis heterog\u00e9nea.
