Se ha demostrado por una parte, que los genes paaabcde son todos necesarios para la hidroxilaci\u00f3n del anillo arom\u00e1tico de pa-coa, primer intermediario de la ruta, y por otro lado, que esta hidroxilaci\u00f3n es dependiente de ox\u00edgeno. En segundo lugar se han estudiado el gen paax, que codifica un represor que controla la expresi\u00f3n de los genes catab\u00f3licos. En este trabajo se ha confirmado que la prote\u00edna paax tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 implicada en la represi\u00f3n de su propia expresi\u00f3n, y se ha observado que el pa-coa es el inductor del sistema. la prote\u00edna paax es capaz de competir y desplazar la uni\u00f3n de la rna polimerasa a la zona promotora. Se ha observado que los promotores de la ruta de degradaci\u00f3n del pa no se pueden activar en anaerobiosis, porque no puede sintetizarse pa-coa, ya que la pa-coa  ligasa pierde r\u00e1pidamente su actividad en ausencia de ox\u00edgeno.  en tercer lugar se ha estudiado la funci\u00f3n del gen paay que se encuentra contiguo al gen paax la ausencia del gen paay retrasa de forma significativa el crecimiento de e. Coli en pa pero s\u00f3lo cuando est\u00e1 presente el represor paax. Adem\u00e1s las c\u00e9lulas deficientes en este gen no son capaces de activar de forma efectiva la ruta paa cuando la bacteria utiliza \u00fanicamente pa como  fuente de energ\u00eda.
