Sin embargo, es durante los finales de los noventa y principios de la d\u00e9cada actual cuando espa\u00f1a empieza a ocupar un puesto de importancia para el turismo receptor finland\u00e9s: el numero de viajeros espa\u00f1oles que visitaron finlandia se duplic\u00f3 entre los a\u00f1os 1997 y 2002. En 2003, m\u00e1s de 70.000 espa\u00f1oles visitaron finlandia y los  datos del 2004 disponibles actualmente, en marzo de 2005, sugieren un ligero aumento respecto al a\u00f1o anterior. En el a\u00f1o 2002, la oficina de turismo de finlandia encarg\u00f3 a la universidad de joensuu una amplia investigaci\u00f3n acerca de la imagen tur\u00edstica del pais en sus siete mercados principales: alemania, suecia, rusia, gran breta\u00f1a, holanda, italia y francia, dirigida por raija komppula y saila saraniemi. La presente tesis doctoral nace con la intenci\u00f3n de extender el mismo estudio a espa\u00f1a, uno de los mercados secundarios  de finlandia con un mayor potencial de crecimiento, con el fin de contrastar los resultados espa\u00f1oles con los europeos. El escaso conocimiento acerca de finlandia descubierto entre los viajeros potenciales sugiri\u00f3 profundizar en la cuesti\u00f3n mediante una ampliaci\u00f3n del estudio, de forma que se analiza tambi\u00e9n la imagen del pa\u00eds como destino tur\u00edstico entre los expertos de las mayoristas espa\u00f1olas y entre los medios de comunicaci\u00f3n vinculados con el turismo. Entre todos los colectivos estudiados, se destaca una falta de imagen homog\u00e9nea e unificada acerca del pa\u00eds. Sin embargo, se observa un denominador com\u00fan para las percepciones de los tres p\u00fablicos, que consiste en una visi\u00f3n predominantemente invernal acerca de finlandia, a
