A pesar de que los dos tejidos est\u00e1n intimamente relacionados, \u00e9stos difieren en composici\u00f3n, estructura y propiedades mec\u00e1nicas. consecuentemente, cada uno cumple con diferentes funciones biol\u00f3gicas y mec\u00e1nicas que se complementan, proporcionando la estructura y funciones propias de la articulaci\u00f3n. Los procedimientos quir\u00fargicos que implican la substituci\u00f3n o reparaci\u00f3n del hueso o cart\u00edlago representan alrededor de 2 millones en los estados unidos. Los tratamientos actuales de lesiones severas y de enfermedades degenerativas de estos tejidos requieren con mucha frecuencia de intervenci\u00f3n quir\u00fargica para sustituir la zona da\u00f1ada por una pr\u00f3tesis sint\u00e9tica. A pesar de que esta pr\u00e1ctica posee un determinado indice de \u00e9xito aceptado durante d\u00e9cadas, los problemas de corrosi\u00f3n, infecci\u00f3n y p\u00e9rdida de adhesi\u00f3n en la interfase tejido-pr\u00f3tesis aun no se han resuelto y actualmente no hay ninguna soluci\u00f3n efectiva para la reparaci\u00f3n del hueso y del cart\u00edlago. Por esta raz\u00f3n, se ha generado un creciente inter\u00e9s en el desarrollo de sustitutos para el hueso y el cart\u00edlago que sean capaces de regenerar estos tejidos y no s\u00f3lo reemplazarlos. Recientemente, una nueva \u00e1rea de investigaci\u00f3n llamada ingenieria de tejidos se ha convertido en un campo de investigaci\u00f3n muy importante junto con la medicina regenerativa. esta disciplina tiene como objetivo desarrollar \u00f3rganos y tejidos artificiales, teniendo en cuenta los mecanismos naturales de se\u00f1alizaci\u00f3n y los componentes del organismo y combinando este conocimiento de  biolog\u00eda celular con la utilizaci\u00f3n de materiales biocompatibles que puedan actuar como vehiculos o inductores de la formaci\u00f3n de tejido nuevo.
