Estos compuestos presentan la extraordinaria propiedad conocida como efecto magnetocal\u00f3rico gigante (mce), por la que se han presentado como firmes candidatos para su utilizaci\u00f3n en sistemas de refrigeraci\u00f3n magn\u00e9tica a temperatura ambiente. dicha propiedad est\u00e1 asociada a la existencia de transiciones magn\u00e9ticas y estructurales acopladas que se pueden inducir mediante la variaci\u00f3n de la temperatura, el campo magn\u00e9tico y la presi\u00f3n hidrost\u00e1tica. Estas transiciones se producen entre diferentes estructuras cristalogr\u00e1ficas de tipo laminar en las que se produce la formaci\u00f3n\/rotura de enlaces de tipo covalente entre pares si(ge)-si(ge), las cuales inducen fuertes anomal\u00edas de volumen y la modificaci\u00f3n dr\u00e1stica de las interacciones magn\u00e9ticas entre las l\u00e1minas.     hemos estudiado diferentes aleaciones de esta familia de compuestos con r=gd, tb, nd, pr y er en forma policristalina preparados mediante fusi\u00f3n por horno de arco, y monocristales de gd5si2ge2 sintetizados por el m\u00e9todo de bridgman. Entre las diferentes t\u00e9cnicas experimentales, destacan la difracci\u00f3n de neutrones como m\u00e9todo de caracterizaci\u00f3n microsc\u00f3pica de la estructura cristalogr\u00e1fica y magn\u00e9tica, y la utilizaci\u00f3n de diferentes t\u00e9cnicas de medida de propiedades f\u00edsicas bajo presi\u00f3n hidrost\u00e1tica (imanaci\u00f3n, dilataci\u00f3n t\u00e9rmica, compresibilidad, resistividad).     en los compuestos basados en gd, hemos enorme influencia de la presi\u00f3n hidrost\u00e1tica en las transiciones magnetoestructurales, que se desplazan a un ritmo de dtc\/dp=+3 k\/bar, mientras que este efecto es m\u00e1s moderado en las transiciones puramente magn\u00e9ticas (+0,3-0,7 k\/kbar). hemos constatado la predominancia de los efectos electr\u00f3nicos
