Como consecuencia se genera una elevada heterogeneidad celular.  desde medianos de los a\u00f1os noventa, el c\u00e1ncer de colon ha sido utilizado como modelo para el estudio de la inestabilidad gen\u00f3mica en c\u00e9lulas tumorales. los tumores colorectales se dividen en dos subgrupos dependiendo del tipo de inestabilidad gen\u00f3mica que presentan. As\u00ed, se define el grupo de tumores que presentan inestabilidad de microsat\u00e9lites con cariotipos diploides, y el grupo de tumores con inestabilidad cromos\u00f3mica, mayormente con cariotipos poliploides.  los objetivos planteados en esta tesis doctoral fueron la caracterizaci\u00f3n citogen\u00e9tica molecular de un conjunto de l\u00edneas celulares de c\u00e1ncer de colon, donde se incluyen l\u00edneas celulares con inestabilidad de microsat\u00e9lites y otras con inestabilidad cromos\u00f3mica (camps et al., 2004, oncol rep). la utilizaci\u00f3n del modelo celular de c\u00e1ncer colon km12 permiti\u00f3 el estudio de la evoluci\u00f3n cariot\u00edpica asociada al potencial metast\u00e1tico a h\u00edgado de las c\u00e9lulas tumorales. Simult\u00e1neamente, el modelo km12 se utiliz\u00f3 para demostrar la posible coexistencia de ambos tipos de inestabilidad gen\u00f3mica, la de microsat\u00e9lites y la cromos\u00f3mica, en las c\u00e9lulas tumorales de colon, cuando se hab\u00eda predicho que eran independientes y exclusivas (camps et al., 2004, int j cancer).  el estudio de la inestabilidad cromos\u00f3mica implic\u00f3 la cuantificaci\u00f3n de la tasa de generaci\u00f3n de alteraciones cromos\u00f3micas estructurales y num\u00e9ricas en la l\u00ednea celular sw480 y cinco subclones obtenidos por diluci\u00f3n m\u00ednima (camps et al., 2005, faseb j). Se utiliz\u00f3 el ensayo de c\u00e9lulas binucleadas e hibridaci\u00f3n in situ fluorescente para analizar los fen\u00f3menos de no-disyunci\u00f3n y p\u00e9rdida anaf\u00e1sica, los cuales
