Tambi\u00e9n se la ha denominado qu\u00edmica receptor-sustrato,  que recuerda el principio de \u00abllave y cerradura\u00bb enunciado por e. Fischer en 1894.  Esta definici\u00f3n, m\u00e1s espec\u00edfica, est\u00e1 basada en la creaci\u00f3n de una supermol\u00e9cula constituida por una mol\u00e9cula receptora y otra sustrato, poseyendo ambas centros de uni\u00f3n complementarios, sin embargo, no puede aplicarse a aquellos casos en los que no se puedan distinguir ambas especies. El proceso de reconocimiento molecular juega un papel fundamental en la mayor\u00eda de procesos biol\u00f3gicos como, por ejemplo, la comunicaci\u00f3n celular, la cat\u00e1lisis o el transporte.  diversos sistemas biol\u00f3gicos (por ej. Adn, prote\u00ednas), construidos a base de la asociaci\u00f3n de peque\u00f1os componentes a trav\u00e9s de interacciones no covalentes, se muestran altamente eficaces.  Las mol\u00e9culas funcionales requieren un alto grado de complejidad, dif\u00edcil de conseguir mediante la s\u00edntesis covalente. por esta raz\u00f3n, los qu\u00edmicos, inspir\u00e1ndose en la naturaleza, est\u00e1n centrando su atenci\u00f3n hacia el uso de fuerzas no covalentes para la organizaci\u00f3n de estructuras supramoleculares, de forma que puedan dirigir su reactividad y controlar su funci\u00f3n.  la qu\u00edmica supramolecular ha logrado importantes avances, en la frontera entre la biolog\u00eda y la f\u00edsica, y constituye por tanto un campo altamente interdisciplinario.  entre los posibles grupos complementarios para generar interacciones no covalentes, la naturaleza utiliza frecuentemente grupos guanidinio para la coordinaci\u00f3n de oxoaniones org\u00e1nicos.
